MLB Bat used in Multimodal Transportation Monitoring Demonstration

The MLB Company (http://www.spyplanes.com) conducted a flight of its Bat mini-UAV to provide imagery products to be analyzed for application as a transportation infrastructure monitoring tool. In conjunction with the National Consortium for Remote Sensing Technology sponsored by the US Department of Transportation, the Bat demonstrated a variety of uses.

In an aerial survey mode, it provided documentation of the new land uses in Boston's Columbia Point neighborhood and its recently redeveloped Harbor Point housing project. The Bat also demonstrated the aircraft's ability to provide continuous surveillance around a point, using the JFK library on Columbia Point as the focal point. The Bat demonstrated its road following capabilities to provide reconnaissance of the multimodal corridor from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) JFK/UMASS station south along the I-93/Red Line South/Old Colony commuter rail corridor. The UAV followed an MBTA Red Line train along the corridor producing real-time video imagery. The Bat monitored traffic conflicts along Morissey Boulevard, a major arterial roadway in the Dorchester neighborhood. The operation was not detectable by pedestrians or motorists in the area.

The Bridgewater State College Police Department and the UMASS Boston Police Department provided public safety coordination during take-off and landing. The MBTA police, MBTA operations staff, and the Bristol County Sheriff's Special Operations staff coordinated in the planning and evaluation of the Bat UAV remote sensing demonstration. These organizations will use the imagery for transit infrastructure security and transit operations security.
