MLB Bat Searches for Invasive Species in Hawaii

MLB (http://www.spyplanes.com) recently operated its Bat mini-UAV in Volcano National Park in Hawaii at the invitation of the United States Forestry Service. In eight flights over four days, the 15 lb aircraft delivered live video to operators on the ground and captured georeferenced still imagery. In all, 2100 acres of rugged terrain on the sides of the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes were imaged at resolutions as high as 2 inches per pixel. Launch and recovery operations took place in several small clearings ranging in elevation from sea level to 4200 feet above sea level. The Bat operated in windy rainy weather just 500 ft above the sloping local landscape. Researchers with the Forest Service and the US Geological Survey will use the imagery for invasive species monitoring and detailed stand sampling.
